SCARBOROUGH — Maine Connections Academy (MCA), the state’s first online public charter school, has selected Will Brown, an eighth-grade student from Pownal, as its February 2021 STAR Student of the Month.
The STAR Student is an MCA scholar, selected from students throughout the state, who represents the school’s accomplishments and spirit.
This is Will’s first year at MCA; he enrolled as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. “School wasn’t really working, where I was,” Will said, “so we did some online research and found Maine Connections Academy and decided to try it.”
Will notes that the best part about an established online school is that “I can manage my own schedule, and work ahead, if I need to. And I like that I can get in touch with teachers anytime – if I need more time in one subject, I can focus more on it. All in all, it’s a lot less stressful.”
Outside of school, Will enjoys ice fishing and snowmobiling. But especially “I like small engines a lot, and I like tinkering on my snowmobile, and my dirt bike.”
Will hopes someday to work in a field associated with small engines, perhaps engineering. For now, “I’m looking ahead to high school.”
