100 years ago,1911

William Smart, the present post-master of Lewiston, was nominated Friday by President Taft for another term. Smart is a veteran of the Civil War, and popular with the patrons of the office and the businessmen of Lewiston in general.

He was nominated for the first time before the occupancy of the position by the late Charles Walker, serving at that time for one term of four years. He was again nominated 12 years ago, and has been in continuous service since that time.

50 years ago, 1961

Lewiston Municipal Court Judge Paul A. Cote at a juvenile court session yesterday ordered that a 7-year-old boy be given sufficient medical attention to allow his return to school. The youngster was in court with chain-smoking parents on a truancy complaint. He has been repeatedly sent home from school because of his personal condition, the Court was told. He also has a tonsil condition.

25 years ago, 1986

The introduction of the “new” Lewiston Journal will be announced March 13, when management people of the Lewiston Sun-Journal/Sunday will address the Lewiston-Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce at the Best Western Auburn Manor Inn.

Speakers at the breakfast meeting will be Publisher James R. Costello Sr., marketing director Gerard P. Michaud and editor Thomas E. Kelsch. The breakfast is followed immediately by the announcement and details of the “new” Journal.
