No American woman risks being carted off to jail for allowing too much hair to show from beneath her scarf. On the other hand, she — or her doctor — may face that fate if she has an abortion, thanks to a recent Supreme Court ruling that robbed women of that right. That, however, is but one iteration of the larger age-old struggle for control of women’s bodies.

Bill Trommer: House 91 candidate Lipson ‘a tireless worker’
This November, the citizens of House District 91 (Leeds, Turner and Wayne) have an opportunity to elect an outstanding person to represent us. Hildie Lipson is a person with that rare ability to find common ground with many different people. She is a careful listener who knows that working with others involves collaborating and crafting […]
Henk Goorhuis: Sheats would work to improve Maine health care system
Availability of health care services is an ongoing challenge in Maine. Frankly, in this area only Democrats have delivered for my district and Maine. I expect my representative in Augusta to look into real ideas for making improvements in Maine’s health, not just empty promises as our health care system continues in distress. During her […]
Barbara Arsenault: Bishop would continue to serve, as House District 77 rep
I am proud to write in support for Bonny Bishop, who is running for the legislature to represent Hartford, Canton, Peru, Mexico, Dixfield and the Route 4 part of Livermore (District 77). Serving the community has always been a constant in Bonny’s life. Her father was a Korean War veteran and she followed in his […]
Hal Phillips: Sheats is best direction for Senate District 20
Having moved to Auburn from New Gloucester in 2021, I’m pleased to support Bettyann Sheats for state Senate. Her record as state representative resulted in bills, passed/funded to support first responders with PTSD; to secure transitional housing for women, veterans and their families; to remove stigma from past offenders seeking employment — so they might […]
Cal Thomas: Contract with America: The sequel
The Commitment to America plan promises to reduce government spending — the main driver of debt which accompanies record high inflation — control the Southern border and the migrants and drugs pouring in, as well as attack violent crime.
Nathalie and James Scribner: Rotundo ‘a strong voice for Lewiston’
We have proudly supported Peggy Rotundo for more than 20 years. The first of our many support signs was posted on our lawn by our son and a toddler granddaughter. That adorable toddler recently turned 26. Peggy continues to treasure those pictures and our support. Peggy is accessible and has a strong connection with her […]
Pam Miner: House candidate Foster supports lower taxes
Greg Foster, who is running for state representative in District 86, has owned his own successful business for 30 years. He is honest, hardworking, and knows what it takes to be fiscally responsible. Greg has lived in Maine his whole life and knows that the people of Maine can manage their own money more wisely […]
