In rebuttal: Rudolph Ziehm: Rich profit from system they hate supporting
I write in rebuttal to Mr. Joe Voisine (“Government takes from middle class to help poor,” Aug. 2). First I must say the only fox these hens need to worry about is one former Gov. Paul LePage, who gave back $300 million meant for Maine health care. After World War II the American people, at […]
Richard Fochtmann: Oil companies profit greatly amid high gas prices
The profits for three oil companies just this quarter — April, May and June — were Chevron, $11.6 billion; Shell, $16.7 billion; and ExxonMobil, $17.9 billion. Meanwhile, Republicans refuse to put a tax on excess profits. The CEOs and stockholders of these oil companies and their Republican politicians want to thank people for paying high […]
Alice Flanders: Poor adults need dental care
I have been waiting for dental care for poor adults for 36 years. I have a very good example of one of the reasons it is a good idea. I had some tenants who were on Aid to Families with Dependent Children. The mother had a toothache. It needed to be pulled. She was out […]
Gloria Holland: SHAREcenter could occupy vacant mall space
It seems like every mall area in both Lewiston and Auburn has more than its share of vacant storefronts. Wouldn’t it be amazing if one of the mall owners stepped up and offered SHAREcenter the space it so desperately needs to continue that incredible program? It would certainly be community-spirited if an acceptable agreement could […]
Jim Wellehan: Protect Lake Auburn, preserve clean air, water
It was a joy to read of Sen. Ed Muskie’s “Clean Water Bill” passing some 50 years ago. Clean air and clean water are things we all need. We’re blessed to have great organizations to keep us aware of the issue — like the Sierra Club, Maine Conservation Voters, and the Natural Resources Council of […]
Craig MacMillan: Most armed citizens carry for protection, not ill intent
I saw on the news July 30 on WMTW 13 about 11 people being shot, with one dead, in six different shootings in Washington, D.C. I don’t understand how this could happen in a city with a complete ban on guns. I guess that isn’t working out so well. Maybe an armed retired police officer, […]
Faith Fontaine: Re-elect Rep. Libby to Maine House
Laurel Libby’s announcement to run for re-election to Maine’s House of Representatives is good news for hardworking Maine families. Despite the roadblocks set up by the Democrat majority that thwarted her bill to ease the excruciating isolation of our elderly during the COVID lockdown, and their failure to bring forth her bill proposing a much-needed […]
