Carole Richards: Women must be ‘treated and respected as equal’
The old white men who make the laws for this country need to go back to school and take a course in anatomy and physiology, because women cannot conceive alone and sperm does not float in the air. I have never heard such ignorant statements concerning abortion — for instance, if a woman is raped […]
Cara Courchesne: Rep. Cloutier a strong, dedicated advocate for Lewiston
I write in support of Rep. Kristen Cloutier in her candidacy for the Maine House of Representatives, District 94. Although I’ve known Kristen for some time, this is my first chance to vote for her due to redistricting. Kristen is a strong advocate for Lewiston. Her thoughtful approach to policy decisions and her dedication to […]
Eileen Fair: Diversity programs resolution reflects white male privilege
The May 8 Sun Journal article about a proposed draft resolution (“Two Lewiston councilors’ draft resolution on diversity programs causes backlash, concern“) is a stark example of ongoing white male privilege. The secrecy, efforts to eliminate learning about and exploring different points of view and experiences, are classic landmarks of patriarchy, racism and homophobia. I […]
Martha Howard: Rep. Libby knows one education mode doesn’t fit all

Laurel Libby knows that children are our future, and that education can never be “one size fits all.” One size fits all doesn’t work well in a t-shirt, and it certainly doesn’t work in education. Public schools work […]
Cal Thomas: Why Mother’s Day weekend?
Irony doesn’t begin to explain why pro-choice activists chose Mother’s Day weekend to picket the homes of Justice Brett Kavanaugh and Chief Justice John Roberts, who appear ready to overturn Roe v. Wade.
In rebuttal: William LaRochelle: Cash, and kindness, can cheer homeless person’s heart
In her May 5 reply to my letter of April 28 criticizing a column by Shannon Jones on homelessness (Sun Journal, April 25), Maureen Andrew accused me of coldness. With the intention of consoling her, Andrew sent a copy of the column to a friend whose son died homeless, just as Jones’ son had. But […]
Bob Mennealy: Bates employees have right to ask for fair share
I was and am disappointed at Bates College’s opposition and expenditure of money to fight its employees’ legal right to organize and unionize. Recent union successes at several Starbucks locations, amid reports of unprecedented amounts of corporate profits in these pandemic years, have motivated workers all over the country to ask for their fair share. […]
