Froma Harrop: Change is coming to health care. Vote wisely
It’s a solid bet that our health care future won’t look quite like the present. Whether the outcome would be good or bad for the average working stiff will depend a great deal on who is president after the 2020 election. If Donald Trump is reelected, we know where health coverage for millions of Americans […]

In praise of dead armadillos
“There’s nothing in the middle of the road but a yellow stripe and dead armadillos.” Even if you’re not aware of the pith of Jim Hightower, you’ll recognize that the above quote didn’t come from around here. I’ll bet that most readers of the Sun Journal have not seen an armadillo, dead or alive, in […]

Democrats achieve clean sweep in 2020. Huh?
All right, for the sake of argument, let us imagine a clean sweep by the Democrats in 2020 — White House, Senate and House. In the Bible (Ephesians 6:11-12), we are advised that, when entering battle, one should “know thy enemy.” So, as conservatives, it behooves us to fully examine the liberal/progressive plans for our […]

Setting up a question for failure
Big mistake. Big, big mistake. The Edward Little High School Building Committee’s consensus decision on Tuesday to put the entire school construction project — including the local option to enlarge the auditorium — into a single question is a gesture of unnecessary force. And, given Maine’s history of splitting questions on school construction projects, uncommon […]

Homer Simpson is in charge. Do’h!
Dope slapping his own forehead and groaning “D’oh!” have made Homer Simpson a symbol for our time. His “Do’h!” seems to sum up “What was I thinking?” Lots of people in public life should be dope slapping themselves and groaning, “What was I thinking?” It’s a natural when a person goes tone deaf. Consider these […]

It’s my life. Leave it alone
I marvel at my wife’s knowledge of movies and music: She’s a formidable trivia opponent. I may know an artist’s name or a popular piece, but rarely do I associate the two. So, I was struck when I first actually listened to Billy Joel’s “My Life” lyrics about a month ago: How often I’ve thought: […]
