Better retirement calculations

In his letter (May 13), Richard Proctor claims individuals are better off retiring at age 65 than at age 70. It is important to make such calculations. It is even more important to use accurate numbers, and not the misleading averages he cited. A better way to assess an individual’s situation is with Social Security’s […]

A fly that can fool you

I love the Sun Journal’s photos of flowers and insect visitors. The photo on page A8 on Wednesday, May 9, is gorgeous. The featured insect actually is a bee mimic: a fly, probably a “hoverfly” (family Syrphidae). The?se pollinators ?are excellent bee mimics? and the larvae of some species consume aphids.? ?Sharon Kinsman, Lewiston

Let your love-light shine

Having endured the onslaught and the temptations that are sure to follow, I am so thankful to say, “Here I am.” Challengers arise at a moment’s notice, and people need to have a thick skin if they are going to survive. But, just knowing where a person’s strength comes from, the battles ahead are just […]

Common sense review of budget

Congratulations to Benjamin Martin for taking the initiative to confront Lewiston School Superintendent Bill Webster regarding the school budget for 2018-19. Shame on those who criticized his using robocalls to hopefully increase voter turnout and make people aware of the out-of-control budget. The school department uses robocalls to contact all student households plus mails out […]

Support for Ned Claxton

I am endorsing Ned Claxton for state Senate. My support for him comes not from being family or a close friend; rather, it comes from having met him just a few months ago. Frankly, I was blown away. Enough to take the time to urge others to get to know him, too. I met Claxton […]

Comment was outrageous

In a White House meeting, Kelly Sadler, aide to President Donald Trump, on hearing of John McCain’s opposition to the president’s pick as CIA director because of her past support of torture, said of the Senator, “It doesn’t matter, he’s dying anyway.” What a hard political atmosphere we are living in now, where one’s common […]

Money isn't everything

I will be voting my conscience in November. Do I support war, rampant greed, pollution, corruption and a “money over all” policy toward the environment and health care? Do I want gun manufacturers dictating policy to the nation’s lawmakers? Government regulation of industry is important and necessary for the protection of all the citizenry. Or […]

A different look at retirement

After reading the Associated Press article about retiring at an older age (Sun Journal, May 9), I thought that the writer should have added some other pertinent facts. According to Social Security average retirement amounts, a 65-year-old male would get $1,152 per month income, or $13,824 per year. At age 70, the average increases to […]

Support for Alex Willette

I have known Alex Willette for a number of years, so I know he will make a great district attorney from Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties. He has always been up front and truthful about where he stands. He will bring fresh blood and new ideas to the DA’s office. I believe his temperament and […]

Service dogs are allowed

This is in response to the letter from Dan Lothrop (May 8). I would like to apologize to Lothrop for the ignorance the public has regarding service dogs. The law is simple — businesses cannot deny entry to service dogs and handler. As an experienced certified dog trainer, I volunteer to train companion service dogs […]
