Lewiston leaders grapple with school budget: ‘The money simply doesn’t exist’

Councilors and school committee members met Monday to work through an education budget that raises spending even as it cuts 30 positions.

Sophia’s House, which offers transitional housing and other services to women in need, has brought back its day center twice per week.

‘It’s where we continue our relationship with the customers,’ one vendor said.

“It’s a place they can come and say, ‘I don’t have protein, or snacks, or enough money to pay for food after paying for rent,’” one official said.

The superintendent presented his first draft of the proposed budget Wednesday. The school committee has the ability to add positions back.

There are several events planned this weekend and next Tuesday to celebrate the green-themed holiday.

Police chased and took into custody a young man, who was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The early plan, which includes county and debt spending, comes amid rising costs and lower revenues.

The representatives of two nearby businesses said the changes at the Bartlett Street site would make things worse in the area.
