KITTERY (AP) – Hoping to improve security while expanding its more traditional missions, the Coast Guard plans to station two 270-foot cutters at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in September.

The additions of the Tahoma and Campbell will allow the Coast Guard to expand its coastal security mission while continuing fisheries enforcement and search and rescue missions.

Their presence could also bolster the shipyard’s case during future efforts to close military bases, said Dave Lackey, spokesman for U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine.

Newell named to lead McIntosh

DOVER, N.H. (AP) – The president of Andover College in Portland has been named the new president of McIntosh College.

Marylin Newell, president and chief executive officer of Andover College, has replaced David McGuire, who left the college in December.

Newell also was an adjunct faculty member at Mid-State College in Auburn and Augusta in Maine, and was named vice president and academic dean there in November 1994.

McIntosh College has about 1,200 students. It offers associate degree and certificate programs in various career programs and a culinary arts program.

During McGuire’s tenure, there was friction with the Dover police, who complained of alleged drug activity and rowdiness in a dorm.

Carroll appointed new director

AUGUSTA (AP) – A longtime employee of the Land Use Regulation Commission has been promoted to director of the state’s wilderness zoning agency, Conservation Commissioner Patrick McGowan announced Friday.

Catherine Carroll was named by McGowan to the post she has held on an acting basis for the past 15 months. Members of the commission voted earlier this week to confirm the appointment.

LURC serves as the planning and zoning agency for 10.5 million acres of townships, plantations and unorganized areas in Maine.

Carroll has been with LURC since 1988.
