1943 – 2003

WEST GARDINER – Steve M. Perry, 59, a resident of High Street, West Gardiner, died suddenly Monday, April 28, due to injuries sustained in a sawmill accident at his home.

He was born on Aug. 10, 1943, in Bridgton, the son of Delmont and Mary Hannon Perry. He was a graduate of Scarborough High School, and received a Bachelor’s Degree in 1965 from the University of Maine in Orono and a Master’s Degree in Engineering in 1967.

While attending college, he worked at Pratt-Whitney Co. and had also worked as a manager at Gates Formed Fibre in Auburn that made parts for the space program. He had an interest in farming, raising cows and farming with oxen, making his own yokes.

He was Professor of Mathematics at the University of Maine in Augusta from 1969 to 1980 and was a self-employed engineer and owner of Perry Machine & Mfg. Co.

He served as selectman for the Town of West Gardiner from 1975 to 1977 and was moderator for several years. He was a Code Enforcement Officer and a Plumbing Inspector from 1975 to 1978 and was a volunteer fireman for the West Gardiner Fire Department. He was an avid reader.

He is survived by his longtime companion, Ronda Rote of West Gardiner; two daughters, Gail Perry of Oceanside, Calif., and Judy Perry of San Francisco, Calif.; four brothers, Osip Mandelstam Bukharin of Gorham, John Scott Perry of Buxton, Mark Perry of Orono and Matthew Perry of Glenn, NH.
