RUMFORD – An investigation continues into a reported tire slashing that occurred sometime Wednesday night or Thursday morning at an Oxford Avenue residence, police said.

Upon noticing a flat tire on her vehicle, which was parked on Oxford Avenue, Linda Jackson, 42, took the tire to be repaired, only to learn someone had slashed it, said acting desk Sgt. David Bean.

Damage was estimated at $100.

In other police news, at 1:10 p.m. Thursday, five minutes before Jackson reported the tire slashing, Phillip Theriault, 21, of Rumford, walked into the police station reporting that someone had attempted to break into his vehicle, Bean said.

The incident occurred while the vehicle was parked near the intersection of Maine Avenue and Washington Street.

“It appeared that someone may have been trying to break in,” Bean said. “The vehicle was locked, and the rubber moulding on a door had been cut.”

Despite the attempt, damage was minimal, he added.
