FARMINGTON – A family was temporarily displaced Friday morning after fire destroyed a workshop and burned a nearby deck and the outside of a mobile home.

The blaze was reported at 8:24 a.m. at the Burchard Cook residence at 226 Mason Road. Cook, his wife and a child were able to get out of the mobile home safely, Fire Rescue Chief Terry Bell said.

About 30 firefighters from Farmington, Chesterville, Industry and New Sharon and eight trucks responded to the scene and contained the fire to the outside of the home.

Bell said Cook had been grinding tools on a bench grinder and a spark probably started the fire.

The shop was destroyed, he said, and the deck attached to the home was burned. Vinyl siding and wood underneath on the rear wall of the home was burned, Bell said.

There was water and smoke damage inside the trailer, he said.

Bell estimated there was about $18,000 in damage.
