I was disappointed when the Sun Journal ignored Maine poets during National Poetry Month in April.

The Sun Journal has exonerated itself with the fine article, “Franco-American writer has three reasons to celebrate,” noting the happy republication of Lewiston author Gerard Robichaud’s classic Maine and Franco-American novel, “Papa Martel” by the University of Maine Press (May 12).

The Lewiston Public Library has scheduled a reading of Robichaud’s work with the Community Little Theater Group. Lewiston-Auburn College will also host a Robichaud grand reception celebrating this Maine classic that should be in every home and read by every student.

Mainers who take pride in the quality of their state’s literature cannot help but be heartened by this turn of events, not only for Gerard Robichaud, who certainly deserves this celebration, but for the interest that may be created in Maine literature at libraries, bookstores and schools.

Congratulations to Lewiston’s wonderful author, Gerard Robichaud, the University of Maine Press, Lewiston Public Library, Lewiston-Auburn College and the Sun Journal.

Maine literature lives with Gerard Robichaud’s “Papa Martel!”
