PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – A motorist died Tuesday after a steel canister fell from a tractor-trailer and rammed through the windshield of his pickup truck, police said.

Charles D. Jannarelli, 68, of Lincoln, was identified as the victim, said State Police Lt. John LaFreniere.

Jannarelli died when a tractor-trailer truck struck an overpass as it tried to enter Interstate 95 north from Route 10 about 1:30 p.m., police said.

State Police Lt. Stephen Bannon said when the truck hit the bridge, two metal canisters fell from it, with one striking the pickup truck.

Police described the canisters as being about six inches in diameter by six inches long. They each weigh about 40 to 50 pounds.

The canisters were attached to a large piece of drilling equipment carried on the flatbed tractor-trailer, Bannon said.

The tractor-trailer was on its way from Winchester, Conn., to Swansea, Mass. when it hit the overpass near the Providence-Cranston border.

Police are also withholding the name of the construction company that owns the equipment. Police said motor vehicle charges will be filed.
