RUMFORD – Volunteers are needed to serve on the Board of Directors of the What Not Shop at 240 Waldo St. The shop offers people an opportunity to assist in the work of Oxford County ARC, which helps people who have developmental disabilities, by donating and buying used clothing and by volunteering. Flag Day event

RUMFORD – The officers of the Rumford Elks Lodge will hold their annual Flag Day ceremony in Veterans Park at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 14, at the end of Congress Street. The members will display U.S. flags with a short history about each one. In case of rain, the service will be held upstairs in the lodge. A lunch will be served following the ceremony. Maine rail history

BETHEL – Railroad historian Bill Robertson will deliver a lecture about “Working on the Railroad” as the second of a five-part series called Transportation in Maine History at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 12, in the Dr. Moses Mason House Lecture/Exhibit Hall, 14 Broad St. Sponsored in part by a New Century Community Program and Maine Humanities Council grant, the series is free and open to anyone interested.

CANTON – The Canton Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department will host the second annual Canton SummerFest. The event will be held Saturday, June 14, at the Canton municipal building and in the ball field across the street. There will be a flea market/craft fair from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the municipal building. In the ball field, there will be a firemen’s muster from 10 a.m. to noon. Door prizes, food, refreshments, games, dunk tank, petting zoo, horse and pony rides, homemade pie judging contest, women’s fry-pan throwing contest and the Canton jail will be open. The Generic Jug Band Zingo-Zanzo will perform from 2-5 p.m. Admission to the ball field will be $5 per adult, $3 ages 10-17 and under age 10 free. In front of the fire station, the Whitney Masonic Lodge 167 will hold a $5-per-meal chicken barbecue. Trail help needed

GORHAM, N.H. – The Androscoggin Ranger District of the White Mountain National Forest is offering a trail maintenance work weekend June 14-15. Brian Johnson, Forest Service trails manager, invites all hikers to join the trail crew in performing basic maintenance on trails in the Gorham area. Volunteers should meet at the Androscoggin Ranger Station on Route 16 in Gorham, N.H., at 7:30 a.m. and plan to be out until about 4:30 p.m. The Forest Service will provide a crew leader, tools, work assignments and instruction. Volunteers should be prepared for hiking and the weather – wear long pants, leather ankle-high boots and leather work gloves, and bring water, food and any personal items needed for comfort. Work is planned for people of all abilities. Children should be accompanied by an adult and be able to work safely for the day. Basic maintenance requires the use of hand tools to trim vegetation and clean out drainage structures.

Extension meeting

PERU – The Peru Extension will meet at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 14, at the Peru Grange Hall. This will be a planning meeting for the next year, as well as the election of officers. Members are asked to bring a bag lunch. Virginia Campbell has the mystery. For more information, call 562-7556.

Legion hall dance

RUMFORD – A Father’s Day dance will be held from 7-11 p.m. Saturday, June 14, at the Rumford American Legion. Music will be provided by crowd-pleasing entertainer Jose Duddy. Tickets are $6, and both members and guests are welcome.
