Among the services to be offered are mammograms and Pap smears.
LIVERMORE FALLS – Free women’s screening is offered from 7: 30 to 10 a.m. Monday, June 23, at Spruce Mountain Health Services.
Maine women 40 and older who have no insurance or whose insurance does not cover annual mammograms or Pap tests or women who have a high deductible may qualify to receive free services at this screening through the Maine Breast and Cervical Health Program.
“It is necessary for women to realize how important these screenings are. If breast or cervical disease is present, making the diagnosis early not only leads to a better prognosis, but may also decrease the amount of treatment a woman will need for the disease. To have both of these exams together, makes it even less of an inconvenience to women,” said Sondra Miller, a provider at Western Maine Family Health Center, who will conduct the screenings.
Debbie Trask from the American Cancer Society will also be at the event to offer one-on-one counseling on breast health issues and current screening guidelines.
Presently, the American Cancer Society screening guidelines and most leading experts recommend a mammogram every year for all women starting at age 40, or earlier based upon family history.
Participants will receive no-cost mammograms, Pap tests, clinical breast and pelvic exams as well as information on nutrition and tobacco.
Women attending this special event also will receive a free bone density screening. The bone density screening will be available 8 to 11 a.m. No appointment is necessary. This screening involves placing a bare heel in the ultrasound machine.
In addition to the clinical services available, women who attend will receive a light breakfast and a variety of free gifts.
