1917 – 2003

WEST PARISMelvena M. DuBois, 86, died Friday, June 27, at the Ledgeview Nursing Home in West Paris surrounded by her family. She was a resident of River Road in Mexico.

Born in Mexico on April 25, 1917, she was the daughter of James W. and Nellie May (Sargent) Gould. She received her GED from Mexico High School and had attended classes at University of Maine at Farmington. For a short time she worked in local shoe shops and later at Diamond Match Corporation in West Peru. She also worked for SAD 43 in the cafeteria, and then as a nutrition aid at the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, at which she primarily served the Andover area.

She was a member of the Mexico Congregational Church.

She enjoyed playing the piano, her years spent at camp at Breton’s Pond, and traveling through the mountains of New Hampshire.

She was married in Mexico on July 24, 1937 to the late Edward DuBois, who died in Rumford on Sept. 30, 1981.

Survivors include two sons, Richard J. DuBois and his wife Marjorie of Andover, and James DuBois and his wife Marlene and her daughter Jocelyn Fletcher of Peru; one daughter, Doris Howes and her husband Frank of Brunswick; three grandchildren, Shannon Sawatsky and her husband Carey of Prince Edward Island, Craig DuBois of Wichita, Kan., and Erin DuBois of Andover; and three great-grandchildren.
