Is a bug an insect? Is a spider a bug? These questions and many more will be answered on Thursday when the Chewonki Foundation “Bugmobile” program brings the world of arthropods (insects and their relatives) to the library. Participants will take a look at the forms and functions of different groups of arthropods and explore fascinating adaptations for survival, such as mimicry, camouflage, armor and venom. The program includes live specimens (such as giant hissing cockroaches, terrestrial hermit crabs and a tarantula), displays, models and activities. The Chewonki Foundation is located in Wiscasset.

Friday’s noontime “Picnic in the Park” features Barbara Hammond, librarian at Meroby Elementary School, who will take a “Flight of Fantasy.” Children will listen to stories while enjoying their picnics. Be sure to pack a lunch and bring along your picnic blanket.

In the event of inclement weather, picnics will be held in the public room. All other Summer Fest programs are at 3 p.m. and last approximately one hour. All programs are free of charge. Parents are welcome at all the programs and are encouraged to attend with younger children.

There is still time to participate in the summer reading program, Take Flight With Reading!, which continues through July 26. Children interested in the summer reading program can get more information about the program and the reading incentives by picking up a weekly reading log in the children’s room.
