LIVERMORE FALLS – Mac Haynes said Thursday afternoon that he’d pose for a photo begging on his hands and knees if it would get more volunteers for Channel 7, the local public access station.

Unfortunately, no camera was available.

Haynes told town managers Alan Gove of Livermore Falls and Ruth Marden of Jay that the need for more help is very real.

Only he and David Corkum are now manning the public access station that could be so much more than it is, Haynes said. “We need people with time,” he stressed.

Now Channel 7 broadcasts only town and school phone numbers, lists of town officials and honors rolls.

His dream would be to have the station broadcasting public events (educational and governmental) five nights a week, four hours each night. Included could be tapes of public meetings such as those of the school boards, selectmen and planning boards, in addition to school events. “It’s better to see it on TV than to get it second hand,” said Haynes.

To bring his dream to reality, he needs people to do two things: videotape events and tend the station while the tapes are broadcast. Training would be available. “They could be trained in two hours,” he said.

And, he needs lots of people, as many as a dozen would be used to carry out the full program. “The more the merrier,” is Haynes’ attitude.

Anyone interested in volunteering (strictly volunteer, he said, no pay) should call him at 897-2985 and talk to his answering service. He promises to return all calls.

Another contact would be Linda Brackett at 897-6384.

Haynes reviewed the station’s history with the managers, noting that it was first called WJLF Channel 2, was shut down about 5 years and restarted as an educational/governmental station in May 2001. “The Link” is an adopted name. The station is located in the Jay Community Building and is handicap accessible.

Citizens of Jay and Livermore Falls support the station with their franchise fees, about $8,000 annually, which is used for equipment. He estimates that their equipment needs are about 80 percent met at the present time.
