Lewiston road crews are hoping that the weather will let them get back on schedule this week.

Crews were scheduled to pave part of Sabattus and College streets last week. Mid-week rain forced them to rescheduled that work until Monday morning, according to Public Works Director Dave Jones.

Crews are scheduled to shut down the eastbound lanes of Sabattus Street near College Street beginning Monday morning and continuing throughout the week. It’s one of the 57 street paving projects the city has scheduled for this summer.

“The total for the year is 57 streets in 64 different places, including ones we’ve already started,” Jones said. “That’s actually a lot more than we did last year.”

Paving crews are also working on five other streets this week. They are: Eustis Street between Lisbon and Pleasant streets; Foch Street between Lisbon and Pleasant streets; Water Street from North Street to the dead end; Webster Street from Plourde Parkway to Maplewood; and Bardwell Street from Vale Street to Campus Avenue.

Jones said he hopes to have crews begin work on College Street and Lafayette Street, both between Campus Avenue and Russell Street, this week as well.

“We were hoping to get all of that done this week, but I don’t know if we’ll make it because of the delay last week,” he said. “That’s just the way it goes. If we have the weather, we get delayed.”

Crews should also be doing paving preparations for five more area streets this week. They are: Montello Street from East Avenue to Stanley Street; Oak Street from Park to Bates streets; Harold Street from Farwell Street to Bushey Circle; Farwell Street from Harold to Charles streets; and Bates Street between Spruce and Ash streets. Those streets are scheduled to be paved next month, he said.

Drivers along Plourde Parkway will continue to encounter delays. Water crews are installing a water line and that will close one lane of the road between Goddard and River roads.

Crews are also scheduled to begin digging along Crowley Road between South Lisbon Road and Webster Road Monday. Those crews will be installing a new 12-inch waterline across that road.

Court Street continues

In Auburn, crews hope to begin winding down work along Court Street and moving to the areas south of Court Street and north of Minot Avenue.

City Engineer Steve Ranney said crews will continue connecting a new storm sewer line under Court Street to catchbasins along side streets.

“We are getting to the end of that work,” Ranney said. “Then we have to rebuild the curb and sidewalk and repave.”

Crews have been surveying five roads south of Court Street getting ready for the next phase of the city’s storm sewer project. Work is set to begin the week of Aug. 11 on Dana Avenue, Summit Street, Hampton Avenue, Merrill Street and Hillside Avenue.

“When that happens, that project will include some blasting as well,” Ranney said.
