LEWISTON-Sarah Overmyer scored three goals and added an assist, all on penalty corners, to lead the Bates College field hockey team to a 6-2 win over Keene State in the first game of the season for both teams Saturday afternoon.
All three of Overmyer’s goals were set up by senior midfielder Annie Schauer. Lori Jessup started all three corners, which Schauer stopped, then rolled to Overmyer who fired all three goals past Keene State goalkeeper Michelle Codding.
Samara Khalique got the Bobcats going early, breaking through the Owls’ defense to score a field goal. Schauer gave Bates a 2-0 lead just over four minutes later, scoring unassisted on a penalty corner.
Overmyer scored the third goal for Bates, then added an assist on a goal by Brooke Anable early in the second half to give Bates a 4-0 lead. Tanya Strong scored two goals in a span of just 1:11 to cut the lead to two before Overmyer scored the final two goals of the game.
Colby 2, Plymouth 1
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Adrienne LeClair scored a goal with 2:18 remaining in the first overtime Saturday afternoon, lifting Colby College past Plymouth State University 2-1 in a non-conference field hockey game at Arnold Field.
Colby begins the season at 1-0 and defeated Plymouth State for the second year in a row.
Colby got on the board first midway through the second half when junior Wendy Bonner converted a penalty stroke. PSU got the equalizer five minutes later with sophomore Lilly Silva converting a Panther fastbreak and tying the score at 1-1.
Colby ended the overtime affair when Bonner led LeClair with a centering pass and LeClair knocked in the game-winner.
Soccer
Lasell 3, St. Joseph’s 1
STANDISH – Lasell College scored three times in the second half as it handed St. Joseph’s College a 3-1 setback in women’s soccer action Saturday afternoon.
Marisa Curtis, Gina DeMico, and Jennifer Cronin each tallied a goal in the win.
The Monks’ lone goal came from freshman Kerri Driscoll.
Thomas 1, UMPI 0
WATERVILLE – The Thomas College women’s soccer team opened it’s 2003 campaign with a 1-0 victory over the University of Maine at Presque Isle Saturday.
The Terriers ended a 0-0 tie with 24 minutes remaining in the second half on a breakaway goal by sophomore Jasmine Carey.
Carey was assisted by senior Amy Young on the goal. Sophomore goalie Jessie Craft had seven saves on the way to her first career shutout.
Bowdoin 5, Babson 0
BRUNSWICK – The Bowdoin College women’s soccer team cruised to a 5-0 win in its season-opener against Babson Saturday.
Babson had an early opportunity to score as Danielle Fazio lobbed a shot from outside the box that hit the crossbar just a minute into the game. Polar Bear netminder Anna Shapell hopped on the rebound and Bowdoin settled down from there, as Jill Falwell tucked a low shot just inside the right post to give the Polar Bears a 1-0 lead.
Melissa Anderson added to the lead, scoring on a header off a corner kick from Cedar Goldman.
Christina Goss made it 3-0 shortly before the half with a goal inside the left post. Kelsey Wilcox scored and Ivy Blackmore added her first career goal in the second half.
USM 9, Wheelock 0
GORHAM – The University of Southern Maine Huskies roughed up the Wheelock Wildcats with a 9-0 season-opening triumph in women’s soccer at the USM Invitational Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Devin Edwards of South Paris gave the Huskies (1-0) their first goal with a deflected cross from Amanda Loomis in the sixth minute of play. Following a subsequent goal by Loomis, the Huskies put the game out of reach with five goals in rapid succession.
Goalies Marcy Ansley and Rachel Kwantz shared duties in goal for USM, seeing little action as the Huskies outshot the Wildcats 41-0.
Jess Stacy made 17 saves for Wheelock.
Clark 2, Simmons 0
GORHAM – Senior Kiley Maguire of Farmington contributed a safety goal as Clark uprooted Simmons College 2-0 in women’s soccer at the USM Invitational Saturday afternoon.
Jennifer Scavone provided the eventual game-winning goal early in the first half when she defected a clearing pass into the open net. Just over two minutes later, Maguire rifled a 30-yard shot into the far corner on a feed from Hannah Pillemeter.
Sophomore Rebecca Dezan turned aside four shots to preserve the shutout, while senior Alia Sullivan recorded eight saves for Simmons College.
Colby 9, Husson 0
WATERVILLE – Sophomore forward Kristin Schmidt collected three goals and sophomore midfielder Kaitlin Herlihy added three assists as the Colby College women’s soccer team opened the season with an easy 9-0 sweep over Husson College in a non-conference game Saturday.
Libba Cox scored her first two collegiate goals in the first 11 minutes of the contest.
Laura Williamson added one goal and two assists in her collegiate debut. Liz Morbeck had one goal and one assist.
Kara McCabe tailed on a penalty kick and sophomore Kelly DeLong scored her first collegiate goal for the Mules.

Soccer
LaSalle 1, Maine 0
St. Bonaventure, N.Y. – Jeff Spiker scored on a breakaway 36 seconds into the second overtime as LaSalle University defeated the University of Maine 1-0 in men’s soccer action Saturday afternoon.
The Black Bears outshot LaSalle 6-4 in the first half and 10-9 overall but could not muster a goal as Stash Graham made six saves to register the shutout.
Rensselaer 4, USM 0
TROY, N.Y. – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute received goals from four different players to shut out Southern Maine, 4-0, in the season-opening matchup for both teams in men’s soccer action Saturday.
Senior defender Taylor Benjamin put the Engineers (1-0) up 1-0 in the 30th minute when he redirected a free kick from sophomore midfielder Ed Sellitto past Husky (0-1) freshman goalkeeper Kane DiBenedetto.
Seven minutes later, freshman Scott Owens made it 2-0 with a shot into the top left corner.
The Engineers added another pair of unassisted goals in the second half, out shooting the Huskies 16-6.
