The 13-year-old was treated for a gunshot wound in his right thigh.
AUBURN – A 13-year-old boy was shot in the leg by a 12-year-old friend at the Bel-Aire Motel Sunday evening.
Police believe it was an accident.
According to Auburn police, the 12-year-old boy shot his friend once in the leg just before 8 p.m. Sunday.
The gun, described only as a medium-caliber firearm, belonged to the shooter’s stepfather, who owns the motel.
The 13-year-old boy was treated for a gunshot wound in his right thigh at Central Maine Medical Center. He was expected to be released late Sunday.
“He seems to be doing fine,” said Auburn Lt. Jason Moen.
Although police believe the shooting was an accident, the incident is under investigation.
“We’re still not sure what went on before the firearm was discharged,” Moen said.
Under Maine law, the shooter’s father could be charged with endangering the welfare of a child if the gun was loaded and left within reach of children, police said.
