The goal was four points, but they’ll settle for two.
The Lewiston Maineiacs completed their second consecutive road trip of three games in three days Sunday with a 2-0 win over the Baie-Comeau Drakkar, ending a five game losing streak and gaining two critical points against a division rival.
“We would rather have had the four points or even six,” said coach Mario Durocher, “but they are valuable points and we’ll take all that we can get.”
After facing a hot Jean-Michel Filiatrault in Quebec and playing a miserable second period Saturday against Chicoutimi when they allowed four goals, the Maineiacs were pleased Sunday to get three solid periods and quality goaltending from Brandon Verge.
“He played well, and I think our defense did well to stop their chances,” said Durocher. “It may well have been 4-0 or 5-0 if their goalie hadn’t done so well.”
Julien Walsh stopped 31 of the 32 shots he faced and garnered the game’s first star despite the loss.
Mathieu Aubin tallied his fifth goal of the season at 13:33 of the second period on a pass from Gabriel Balasescu to give Lewiston all of the offense it would need.
The other Maineiacs’ tally came with an empty net at 19:21 of the third frame, courtesy of Alex Bourret on a pass from Alexandre Picard.
“Picard didn’t score a goal tonight,” said Durocher. “I had asked him from the beginning of the weekend to worry about defense, too, and he did that very well.”
Picard was the second star of the game, while Aubin was No. 3.
The Maineiacs return to action Friday night in their first home game in three weeks when they host the Halifax Mooseheads at the Central Maine Civic Center at 7 p.m.
