1928 – 2003

CANTON – William R. Pettengill Jr., 75, a resident of Canton, went home to the Lord Monday, Oct. 27, at the Victorian Villa Nursing Home where he had been a patient since September of this year.

He was born on Aug. 4, 1928, in East Livermore, the son of William R. Sr. and Madelyn A. Stewart Pettengill. He was a graduate of Livermore Falls High School and the University of Maine Technical College of Lewiston-Auburn.

He served his country during World War II in the Army Air Corps in the Pacific, stationed in Alaska. On July 9, 1960 he married Edith S. Enman in Bethel. They made their home on River Road in Canton.

“Bill” worked as a handsewer at G.H. Bass Co. in Wilton and Bostonian in Freeport in 1968 and owned and operated the Citgo gas station on Minot Avenue from 1968 to 1969. He also worked for W.T. Grant Co. as an automotive manager in Lewiston and Ellsworth in 1975.

He was later self-employed as a wholesaler for white pine Christmas trees and nursery stock, retiring in 1988. He also enjoyed his time as a greeter for Ames Department Store.

He was a member of the Jay Baptist Church and the American Legion of Canton. He enjoyed music and dancing and especially looked forward to the family getting together and always enjoyed seeing his grandchildren on the school bus.

He is survived by his wife of Canton; seven sons, Pete Davenport and his wife Fonda of Peru, Michael Pettengill and his fiancee Terri Tudico of Stuart, Fla., Richard A. Davenport and his companion Kerry Eldridge of Auburn, Richard C. Pettengill of Jupiter, Fla., Milton Pettengill of Meridian, Miss., Douglas Davenport and his companion Peter Brodeau of Lewiston and Jeffrey Pettengill and his companion Pam Hardy of Canton; two daughters and their husbands, Marjorie and Scott Averill of Nobleboro and Debra and Steven Page of Leeds; a brother, Frank Palmer Pettengill of Lake Wales, Fla.; three sisters, Wihelmina Wells of Wayne, Fay G. Page of Madison and Sue Moody and her husband Hubert of Naples, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
