RUMFORD – Local firefighters, police officers and Med-Care staff engaged the youth in activities and demonstrations during the DARE Park Block Party and Rumford Parks and Recreation Appreciation Day on Oct. 18.
Activities included an introduction to marble games, hoop shoot for toddlers and older youth, jump rope, hoola hoop and hopscotch competitions. There was a demonstration of hackysack skills, football punt, pass and kick and a Halloween scarecrow contest.
Ribbons and prizes were awarded to participants, and the Parks Department offered grilled hot dogs, hamburgers and fries.
A survey was taken, asking what people they would like to see happen in the neighborhood. One area of interest was to have the community skating rink brought back to its previous location.
The event was hosted by the Safe Neighborhood Committee, a project of the River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition, One ME Initiative in collaboration with the Rumford Parks and Recreation Board. The Safe Neighborhood Committee was developed by two student interns from the UMA Rumford/Mexico Center to promote safe youth activities and address community concerns.
