LEWISTON – A man struck by a car while walking on Russell Street earlier this month died Tuesday at Central Maine Medical Center.

Daniel Michaud, 54, died of head and other injuries 10 days after he was struck while walking to a friend’s house from his Main Street home.

Michaud was struck in front of the 44 Russell St. home of Raymond Audet, the friend Michaud had been going to visit at the time of the wreck.

“He was coming to see me, and I was waiting for him,” Audet said Wednesday. “We were going to go to Burger King together. He wanted a Whopper.”

Audet saw the crash from his home but did not realize it was his friend who had been injured. He called for help and then rushed out to see if he could assist at the crash scene.

Michaud had been flung onto the hood of a Toyota Camry and came to rest partially embedded in the windshield, police said.

“I looked in the car and I could see him. I could see his face,” Audet said. “It was awful.”

Police reconstructed the crash scene and began an investigation. Because Michaud died within 30 days of the accident, it is still being investigated as a fatal wreck.

Police have said the crash was not the fault of the driver, 31-year-old Lisa Evans of Lewiston. Witnesses said it was dark when Michaud apparently stepped into the westbound lane on Russell Street not long after sundown.

Evans was not hurt in the crash. Her 8-year-old daughter riding in the back seat was also unharmed.

Michaud, a graduate of Edward Little High School in Auburn, once owned a car sales business in Auburn and a paving business in Lewiston. He had lingered in critical condition for more than a week after he was struck. He died shortly after noon Tuesday at CMMC.

“He was a very, very good friend,” said Audet. “He was a very good person. Very kindhearted.”

Audet said he learned Tuesday afternoon that his friend had died. The fact that the collision occurred in front of his home only deepened his grief.

“Every time I look out of my house now, I can still see it happening again,” he said. “It’s tragic when you lose someone like this.”
