BOSTON -Kevin Reed scored a career-high 36 points, including 24 in the first half, to lead Maine to a 89-78 victory over Harvard on Tuesday night.

Maine (4-1) used a 13-0 run, highlighted by six points from Reed, in the first half to open up a 57-40 lead at the break. The Black Bears led by as many as 20 points, 51-31, after Freddy Petkus’ 3-pointer.

Harvard (0-4) trailed by double digits for most of the contest, but cut Maine’s lead to six points, 82-76, on Jason Norman’s basket with 2:24 remaining.

Reed hit four of his six 3-pointers in the first half.

Mark Flavin added 12 points and Eric Dobson had 12 points and eight assists for Maine.

Matt Stehle had a career-high 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Crimson, whose 0-4 start is its worst since the 1991-92 season when it began the season 0-11. The Crimson have lost six straight dating back to last season.

Kevin Rogus had 22 points and Michael Beal and Norman each added 10 for Harvard.

Lasell 59, Colby 57

WATERVILLE – Evans Cazeau popped in a layup with nine seconds left to lift the Lasell College men’s basketball team to a 59-57 triumph over Colby College Tuesday afternoon.

Cazeau finished with 10 points and eight rebounds, while Demetrius DeJesus and Napolean Sandeford each chipped in with 12 points for the Lasers’ (3-0) win.

Patrick McGowan had 14 points and five steals to pace Colby (3-2). Andrew Jenkins and Michael Westbrooks both had 11 points and five rebounds. Westbrook also led the Mules with five assists.

CMCC 73, NECC 64

AUBURN – Lance Poland sank a game-high 17 points to lead Central Maine Community College to a 73-64 win over North Essex Community College Tuesday evening.

Chris Brackett and Jeremy Thomas combined for 30 points for the Mustangs (10-2), while Josh Berard added 10 points in the win. North Essex was paced by Greg Duncan with 15 points and Joe Tardiff chipped in with 13, while James Anderson and Sercan Fenerci each added 12.

Bates 84, UMM 62

LEWISTON – Ramon Garcia scored 23 points, including 20 in the first half, to lead the Bates College men’s basketball team to an 84-62 win over the University of Maine at Machias Tuesday.

Garcia was 7-for-7 from the field in the first half, hitting all four of his three-point attempts. Brian Gerrity added 19 points, while Jon Furbush scored 13 points and led the Bobcats (3-1) with nine rebounds.

Bayi Handy scored 19 points on 7-for-13 shooting from the field to lead the Clippers (4-7).

Women’s basketball

Bowdoin 59, USM 52

GORHAM – Vanessa Russell and Erika Nickerson scored 14 points apiece to lead Bowdoin College to a 59-52 win over the University of Southern Maine Tuesday evening.

Justine Pouravelis chipped in with 12 points and nine rebounds, while Lora Trenlke added eight points, five rebounds, and five assists for the Polar Bears (4-0).

The Huskies (3-1) were paced by Tiffany Jones, who scored a game-high 16 points, and Jen Webster who added 13 points and seven boards.

Hockey

Bowdoin 6, Colby 3

WATERVILLE – Bowdoin College scored four times in the third period to pull away for a 6-3 victory over Colby College in hockey action Tuesday night.

Matt Roy and Andy Nelson each netted two goals for the Bowdoin win. Michael Stevens and Bryan Ciborowski each scored a goal for the Polar Bears. Shannon McNevan was credited with two assists.

Cory Ernst notched a goal and an assist for the Mules, while Nick Bayley and Joel Morash each added a goal.

USM 4, Plymouth State 2

WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. – Goalie Matt Collaton made 23 saves Tuesday night ,helping the University of Southern Maine post a 4-2 victory over Plymouth State.

Erik Kent, Ryan Wright, Mat Kerling, and Chris Sparkes each registered a score for the Huskies (2-2-0).

The Plymouth effort was led by Dennis Kane who scored a goal and an assist, and Rory Nickerson also dropped in a goal. Kyle Vandingstee stopped 35 shots in net for Plymouth State.
