MECHANIC FALLS – Teachers stood shivering outside the Elm Street School Tuesday evening with candles, signs and lapel stickers that read “We still do not have a contract.”

About 35 teachers and parents showed up at the school committee meeting to voice concerns about certified staff working into a second year without a contract. Despite several previous attempts at mediation, teachers and the committee have yet to come to terms. Next week, both sides will enter into a fact-finding process leading to nonbinding recommendations.

Laura Parks, speaking for the teachers’ union, said teachers have become frustrated with the negotiating process and staged Tuesday night’s protest to make the public aware of the school’s situation. Parks said that drawn out negotiations are affecting staff morale, and that some longtime teachers are beginning to look elsewhere for jobs. Salaries, health benefits and policy issues remain in dispute.

“We invited the community to come out so that they could know what was going on,” said Parks. “We wanted the (school) committee to see that we’re not just going to lay down.”

Several parents gave emotional testimonies as to the teachers’ dedication, expertise and rapport with students. “What they’re asking for is minimal compared to what they give,” said parent Jeanette Pakulski.

Assistant Superintendent Bill Doughty said the committee is offering salaries and benefits that equal or exceed other school districts. Legalities prevented the committee from going into details with the public, said Doughty.

Committee member Terry Arsenault said that she also hears from residents who are unwilling to be taxed beyond the $29.65 for every $1,000 of assessed property value.

“At some point we’re going to have to get past this,” said committee member Dave Griffiths. “This is not about any lack of respect for what you do. Please understand that the people who elect us live here, and many of you (teachers) do not.”
