LEWISTON – Nicole M. Willey, a senior at Lewiston High School, has been voted by the senior class as the DAR Good Citizen, and Tarrah Bowen, also a senior, has been voted the DAR Patriotism Medal Winner.
The faculty makes the initial selections and the senior student body then votes for their choice of the three top nominees for each award.
The DAR Good Citizen must have the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism to an outstanding degree. The selection of the DAR Patriotism Medal winner is based on excellence in acts of service, courage, leadership, honor and patriotism.
DAR Good Citizens who enter the scholarship contest are eligible for awards beyond the chapter level. Each state winner receives a cash award in the amount of at least $250 (or a savings bond) and a state DAR Good Citizen pin and certificate.
The national winner will be invited to Washington, D.C., to attend DAR Continental Congress and be awarded a $3,000 scholarship, an inscribed silver bowl and a national DAR Good Citizen pin and certificate.
The national second-place winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship and certificate and the third-place winner will receive a $750 scholarship and certificate. Each of the nine national division (multi-state groups) winners receive a cash award in the amount of $500.
Willey is the daughter of Bud and Jennifer Willey of Lewiston and Bowen is the daughter of David and Renee Bowen of Lewiston.
