1913 – 2004

LEWISTON – Gerard L. Chretien, (Blanc) 90, of 191 Scribner Blvd., Lewiston, died Sunday evening, Jan. 25, at Ste. Marguerite d’Youville Pavilion, after a short stay.

Born in Lewiston, Dec. 10, 1913, the son of Demetrius Chretien and Exilia (Mercier) Chretien, he was educated in local schools and graduated from Roberts Academy.

He worked 25 years at the Androscoggin Mill and later for 20 years at Lown Shoe as a purchasing agent for both mills. He then worked for public works as a dispatcher for eight years until retirement in 1979.

He had been a member of St. Mary’s Parish. He (Mon Oncle Blanc) was an avid fisherman and could be found trolling on Moosehead, Sebago and other Maine lakes for trout and salmon throughout his life. He also enjoyed rabbit hunting with his beagles. Other hobbies included gardening and he especially enjoyed growing geraniums to beautify his home. He was also very adept at woodworking and crafting.

He was a man that enjoyed each day to the fullest, especially when it included family and friends. He was a real joker and prankster. He will be sadly missed by all whose lives he touched.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Florette (Poulin) Chretien; a sister, Theresa Richard; his brother-in-law, Paul Poulin; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Demetrius, Rene, Reginald and Bertrand; and his sisters, Yvette Field, Rolande Major, Carmen Bolduc and Delores Lauze.
