1916 – 2004

WINTHROP – Margaret Catherine Markowski, 87, died Saturday, Feb. 14 at her home on Stanley Road in Winthrop, with her family at her side.

She was born the eighth child of Thomas and Margaret Keough O’Grady on July 28, 1916, in Northfield, Vt. She was a graduate of Northfield High School and went on to graduate from the Fanny Allen School of Nursing in Vermont.

She was a registered nurse specializing in private duty nursing and was also the charge nurse on the pediatric ward at the local hospitals.

She married Michael A. Markowski on Aug. 9, 1941, in Northfield, Vt. He passed away in 1977.

In 1945, she and her late husband established Mar Mik Farm in Winthrop. They developed a fine herd of Shetland Ponies and also a prize-winning herd of Golden Guernsey dairy cattle which continues today.

She was a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church.

A member of the Maine Guernsey Breeder’s Association, she was also a past officer of several agricultural organizations and a 4-H volunteer. She always enjoyed going to all the Agricultural Fairs in New England.

She was a generous and caring person. Her wisdom and sense of humor will be greatly missed.

She is survived by one son, Michael and his wife Terry of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and four daughters, Peggy Wilson and her husband Jack of Little Rock, Ark., Carol Guimont and her husband Roger of Readfield, Karen Trenholm and her husband Mike of Winthrop, and Kathy Poulin also of Winthrop. In addition, she is survived by 10 grandchildren, Bryan and Gregg Markowski, Jeff and Jonathan Wilson, Chris and Rick Martin, Tom and Anne Trenholm, Jennifer Williams, and Cindy Flick; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased in 1977 by her grandson, Corey Joseph Martin; and her seven siblings, Gerald, James, George, Thomas, Francis, Wilfred, and Mary.
