1924 – 2004
WINTER PARK, Fla. – Charles Clifton Penney Jr., 79, died Sunday, Feb. 29, at Winter Park Towers.
He was born in Lewiston, on Dec. 26, 1924, the son of Charles and Mary Regina Penney. He attended schools in Lewiston and then went on to Kimball Union Academy in Meriden, N.H., from which he graduated in 1942. After graduation he immediately joined the Army where he served in the Pacific, finishing his tour of duty with the occupying forces in Japan. Mr. Penney then enrolled at Bowdoin College where he graduated from in 1949. He entered the family business, the T.J. Murphy Fur Co. in Lewiston, eventually branching out on his own to purchase the E. K. Day Co. in Rumford, which he owned until 1968.
In 1968, he and his family moved to Orlando, Fla., where he became associated with John’s Nursery in Apopka, moving on to become an independent plant broker in the mid-1970’s. In 1989, Mr. Penney suffered his first massive stroke from which he almost fully recovered. In 1995, a second stroke resulted in paralysis and loss of speech, but not his ability to comprehend or his wonderful sense of humor. He had been a resident of Winter Park Towers.
“Chuck” will be remembered as a great sports enthusiast……never losing faith in the Boston Red Sox and Notre Dame football. He was an outstanding baseball player, pitching on amateur teams in Maine, during his college years. During his time in the Army, where he also played ball, he happlily remembered striking out Johnny Mize, former first baseman with the N.Y. Giants. He was a lifelong avid tennis player, the “champion of Popham Beach tennis.” He was a member of Psi Upsilon fraternity, a former member of the Country Club of Orlando, and the Winter Park Racquet Club, and a member of All Saints Church.
He leaves three sons, Charles C. (Kip) Penney III (Diana Prizio) of Knox, Michael G. Penney (Kim) of Orlando and Christopher W. (Tod) of Durham, N.C.; grandchildren, Jessica, Joshua and Sarah Penney of Orlando and Christopher and Laura Penney of Durham, N.C.; and a sister Kathryn Penney McNally of Chatham Twp., N.J.
