WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Maine’s Melissa Heon and Heather Ernest scored 13 points each as the Black Bears pounded the University of New Hampshire 66-44 in an American East women’s tournament quarterfinals Thursday.
Kim Corbitt also pitched in with 12.
Maren Matthias drained a team-high 13 points for the Wildcats. Maine will play the winner of Hartford and Albany in the semifinals Friday.
Softball
St. Joseph’s 9,
Emmanuel 4
CAPE CORAL, Fla. – Helene Liaci went 2-for-3 and knocked home two RBIs as St. Joseph’s beat Emmanuel College 9-4 in college softball action Thursday.
Katie Foley hit a home run for Emmanuel College (2-3) .
Kahler Dowling pitched a complete game and struck out seven for St. Joseph’s (2-4). Dowling also went 2-for-4 and had three RBIs.
St. Joseph’s 6, St. Ambrose 7
CAPE CORAL, FL – Mae Freyermuth and Emily Cuneo each hit home runs for St. Ambrose as it slipped past St. Joseph’s 7-6 in a college softball Thursday.
Helene Liaci went 4-for-4 and batted in all six of the runs for St. Joseph’s (2-5). Catherine Rose hit two triples for St. Ambrose.
Sierra Herring pitched the entire game and got the win for St. Ambrose (4-4).
Women’s lacrosse
Bates 22, UNE 0
LEWISTON – Twelve different players scored as the Bobcats overwhelmed the University of New England with a 22-0 victory in a non-league women’s lacrosse matchup on Thursday night.
Lori Jessup scored four goals and Erica Nason, Becky Castle and Katherine Farmer each netted three for Bates. The Bobcats outshot the Nor’easters 41-5
Skiing
TRUCKEE, Calif. – Chris Leonards, a rookie from Bates College, finished 38th in the 10-kilometer freestyle at the NCAA Skiing Championships Thursday afternoon.
Leonards of Wilton covered the course in 25:19.2, less than four behind the individual winner.
Henning Dybendal of the University of Utah was the individual champ.
Bates only scored two team points and it all came from Leonards’ finish. The Bobcats are in 20th place with 18 points after two days of competition.
