High speed Internet access will be available as well.

FARMINGTON – People here will soon have a few more channels to choose from as well as high speed Internet access at their fingertips.

On Tuesday, selectmen held a public hearing on future cable television-related needs and community interests. George Allen, vice president and general manager of Bee Line Cable, answered questions and discussed pending changes for cable television subscribers. “This is a huge project,” Allen said.

In order to provide the new services, special fiber optic cables will be added to specific subscribing areas around town. The lines will improve Internet access and nearly double bandwidth, making room for more channels in the future.

Bee Line has 1,650 subscribers in Farmington, while Wilton has 1,000. Customers shouldn’t expect any large financial impact from the project, Allen said.

He also placed emphasis on more assistance his company plans to give to surrounding schools and municipal buildings.

“We’re not just building this for cable television and Internet, we have other things in mind,” Allen said.

Bee Line Cable is one of the few independent cable companies in the state.

Contractors are expected to start as early as next week on the project, which should be finished in about six months.
