LEWISTON- Brandon Brewer was 4-for-6 with two home runs and five RBI and Greg Stacy went 3-for-5 with two RBI and four runs scored to lead the University of Southern Maine baseball team to a 15-6 win over Bates College in a non-league game at Leahey Field Wednesday afternoon.

Brewer gave the Huskies a 3-0 lead in the top of the second with a three-run homer. He added a solo shot in the ninth to cap the scoring for USM.

Stacy reached base and scored in his first of four plate appearances, starting with a walk in the second and scoring on Brewer’s home run. He added a solo homer in the third and doubles in the fourth and sixth innings.

Rob Maguire led Bates, hitting a two-run home run in the fourth inning and driving in another run when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the seventh. Drew McKenna went 2-for-3 for the Bobcats, who fell to 11-15.

Colby 8, Thomas 2

WATERVILLE- Despite missing the last eight games with a shoulder injury, Colby College’s B.L. Lippert managed to hit a home run among his three hits to lead the Mules to an 8-2 victory over Thomas College in non-conference baseball Wednesday at Coombs Field.

Lippert was one of four Colby seniors who made an impact in their final home game. Eric Roy added two hits and a run scored, Vincent Domestico had one hit, one run and one RBI, and Phil Geiger pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to close out the victory.

Softball

Elms 6, UMF 5

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College senior Tina Fontainue went 2-for-4, including a game-tying, three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning as Elms College defeated the University of Maine at Farmington 6-5 in softball Wednesday.

UMF struck first for three runs in the first inning and two in the third, while the Blazers scored twice in the first inning on a two-run triple by Jen LeDoux. The Blazers were held scoreless until the four-run rally in their final at-bat. An outfield error on a hard hit line drive by LeDoux plated Holly Stevens with the game-winning run.

Sophomore pitcher Kristi Guzzo struck out 10, including a pair of strikeouts in the second, third, fourth, and fifth innings.

For the UMF effort, Cynthia Ravinski went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Mary Berry went 2-for-4.

Babson sweeps

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Colleen Kelly, Beth Ziner, Allison Armstrong, and Jill Paine celebrated their final collegiate home games on Wednesday by leading the Babson College softball team to a doubleheader sweep over St. Joseph’s, 4-2 and 4-1 Wednesday.

Babson snapped a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning in Game 1, as Kara Courtney doubled and Kelly later scored on a wild pitch. Stacy Schlicht was outstanding on the mound in Game 1 for Babson, allowing two runs, both unearned, on three hits while striking out a career-high nine in the complete game win.

Kara Courtney went 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI for the Beavers effort.

Game 2 belonged to Kelly, who went 2-for-3 with two doubles at the plate and tossed a five-hit complete game win on the mound.

Maine splits

ORONO – Boston University met up with the University of Maine split a softball doubleheader Wednesday BU won the first game 3-0, while Maine claimed a 2-0 victory in the second game.

Liz Alley, DeKenya and Ashlee Freeman each hit doubles for BU in the opening game. Freeman struck out four batters on mound for the Terriers.

Molly McKinney and Amy Kuhl hit doubles for Maine in the nightcap to secure a 2-0 triumph. Jennifer Merchant was solid on mound for the Black Bears, striking out 12 batters.
