HARRISON – Jillian Jermyn, sixth-grade student from Harrison School, won first in the state in the Society of American Foresters’ 2003 annual Forestry Poster Contest.
Around 1,500 students competed from 12 counties and approximately 25 schools. Society member and forester Clifton Foster presented the award to Jermyn at the school.
The poster contest is part of the professional foresters’ annual visits to the schools as part of the sixth-grade curriculum on forestry. As part of the visits, the students are asked to submit posters that represented what they learned.
The theme was “What’s Green and Growing and Covering Maine?” When the entries were received, the county coordinator teams selected the best posters. The county winners were judged by the state executive committee.
The county finalists’ posters were displayed at the New England meeting in Quebec. The society is a national organization representing professional foresters from federal, state, industry, consulting and other fields of work.
