DURHAM – Geoffrey Leighton, a 13th-generation Mainer who has been long active in his community is a candidate for House District 105, which includes Durham and New Gloucester.

Leighton believes in the right of all people to have accessible and affordable health care. He also is concerned about the environment and feels that tax reform, education and business development must work together to ensure Maine’s future.

“I believe that real tax reform is made up of two components: immediate tax relief for property owners and the growth of Maine’s economy through a well-educated work force and a government that supports and encourages business,” Leighton said.

He has served on Durham’s Government Studies committee, serves on the Budget Committee and is chairman of the Telecommunications Committee.

He has coached the Durham Middle School girls’ varsity basketball team as well as town softball and baseball teams and he served as a big brother in the Big Brother, Big Sister organization.

Leighton has helped to create the Durham River Park and oversees the Durham Town Newsletter, Web site, and public access television channel.

He graduated from Syracuse University with a degree from the Newhouse School of Communications. He operates a film, video and multimedia communications company out of offices in his house in Durham.

As a small business owner, Leighton belongs to the Androscoggin, Greater Portland and Maine State chambers of commerce and serves on the board of the Maine Film and Video Association.
