CONCORD, N.H. (AP) – A 22-year-old soldier from Concord was injured Wednesday in a mortar attack that left three U.S. soldiers dead at a base north of Baghdad, the National Guard said.

The explosion at Camp Anaconda wounded 25, including two civilians.

The injured New Hampshire soldier was identified as Pfc. Mark Davis, who suffered shrapnel wounds to his back, arms and chest and was flown to a hospital in Germany.

“I want Mark Davis and his family to know my thoughts and prayers are with them at this time, ” Gov. Craig Benson said.

Davis is a member of C Mountain Company of the 172nd Infantry Regiment, a Manchester-based unit of the New Hampshire National Guard.

The regiment includes 180 New Hampshire soldiers who provide convoy and supply route security and reconnaissance and patrols with Iraqi military units.

Another eight members of the company serve in Afghanistan.

The New Hampshire Guard has 900 members serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Teen charged in man’s wounding

ROCHESTER, N.H. (AP) – A Rochester teen has been charged with wounding a Berwick man in a shooting Wednesday. Ian Nasino, 18, was charged with assault.

Brian Bentley, 31, was in fair condition with a stomach wound.Police said Nasino and Bentley know each other.

Owner agrees to lead-paint fine

PORTLAND (AP) – The owner of a Biddeford apartment building has agreed to pay the Environmental Protection Agency more than $24,000 for violating lead paint disclosure rules.

The EPA said the property owner, 94 Cleaves Street Corp., violated federal law by renting an apartment to families with children under 6 without telling them of the presence of lead paint.

Police defuse pipe bomb in N.H.

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) – Police said they may have thwarted a pipe bombing Wednesday.

An officer patrolling behind the East Side Plaza was on the lookout for people who have been setting trash bin fires.

Around 12:30 a.m., he stopped two people he thought were acting suspiciously and found one was carrying a pipe bomb.

The device was defused by the state police bomb squad and Derek Sedita, 20, of Manchester, was charged with having the bomb.
