RUMFORD – Mary Arlene Tripp, 87, died in Rumford on July 17.

She was born in Bethel on Sept. 18, 1916, the daughter of Robert and Bertha G. (Weeks) Bean. She was educated in Newry schools and graduated from Gould Academy in 1935.

She was a homemaker and lived in Newry most of her life, except for several years when she worked for Coe & Annis in Hartford, Conn. She was the tax collector for the town of Newry for nearly a quarter of a century.

She is survived by one daughter, Suzanne Hayner, of Newry; one son, Peter Baker, of Hanover; two sisters, Ernestine McDonald, of Hartford, Conn., and Jane Young, of Bethel; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Roy Tripp in 1975; one brother, Robert; and four sisters, Frances Gunther, Winifred Scott and Pauline Chapin, and Ina Carey.
