LEWISTON – Eugene L. Merrill, 83, died Wednesday, July 21, surrounded by his family, at the d’Youville Pavilion. He formerly resided in Andover, most of his life and in the past several years has resided in Coleman, Fla., Alaska, and Lewiston.

He was born in Andover, on Aug. 10, 1920, a son of Harry W. And Mabel (Holman) Merrill, and graduated from Andover High School, Class of 1938.

He proudly served within the United States Coast Guard in the Merchant Marine during World War II from Dec. 7, 1941 to Aug, 15, 1945.

For many years, he was a farmer and later worked at the Rumford Falls Power Co. for over 22 years until retirement in 1978 as an operator.

He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing in Alaska, and after retirement worked in the gold mines of Alaska.

He was married in Mexico, on June 28, 1945 to the former, Ethelene B. Silver who resides in Lewiston;

Other survivors include a daughter, Jeanne Marcucci and husband, Thomas, of Allyn, Wash.; four sons, Kenneth and wife, Beverly, of Winthrop, John and wife, Julie, of North Pole, Alaska, Kerry and wife, Maria, of Peru, and Robert Merrill, of Andover; a sister, Mrs Virginia Justard and husband, Gordon, of Rumford; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Erlon, Walter and Elwin Merrill; and parents, Harry and Mabel Merrill.
