LEWISTON – William F. “Bill” Perkins, 68, of Porter Avenue in Rumford, died in Lewiston July 20, after a brief illness.

Born in Livermore Falls on Dec. 5, 1935, he was the oldest son of Carroll and Lorraine O’Hearn Perkins. He attended Rumford schools graduating from Stephens High School, and continued his education graduating from Bentley College in Massachusetts. During his high school and college years he worked as a movie projectionist at the Rumford Drive-In Theater. As a youngster he had a very large paper route for both the Rumford Falls Times & Lewiston Daily Sun.

He served the town of Rumford for nine plus years as town clerk and treasurer, being the youngest elected to that position in the state at the age of 22. He then went into banking, working for Franklin Savings Bank as the first branch manager of the bank. He retired after 25 years in 1991 as Vice-President & Branch Coordinator.

Always interested in town affairs, he served on several town committees. He was auditor for the town of Rumford and also for other surrounding towns and districts. Elected as Oxford County Treasurer in 1974, he served until his retirement in 1996. He was a practicing public accountant and tax practitioner for many years.

“Bill” served as a member of the board of trustees at Rumford Community Hospital, and also volunteered his services as treasurer of Hope Training School in Mexico. He was a Past Worthy President of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, was a member of the Rumford Maine Lodge of Elks, the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Fr. Ambrose J. Barry Council Knights of Columbus. He was a communicant of St. Athanasius – St. John Parish.

He is survived by his wife, the former Virginia “Ginny” Ramey, of Rumford; three sons, William and wife, Gina, of Tampa, Fla., Wayne and companion, Joanne Beaudoin, of Durham, Brad and wife, Michelle, of Jay; three daughters, Kelly and husband, Jon Folson, of Bangor, Lori and husband, Doug Thibault, of Weld, and Kathy and husband, Brian Gagnon, of Rumford; 11 grandchildren, Tyler, Nolan and Alyson Perkins, Jennifer and Chris Folsom, Travis and Brittany Thibeault, Samantha and Alex Gagnon, and Alexa and Hailee Perkins; one aunt, Theresa Bernard and husband, Bob, of Rumford; and a special great-aunt, Kathleen Poland, of Livermore Falls.

He was predeceased by his parents; and two brothers, Linwood and Richard.
