OQUOSSOC – The Outdoor Sporting and Heritage Day is scheduled to take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Rangeley Region Guides’ and Sportsmen’s Association’s clubhouse on Old Skiway Road in Oquossoc.

“The purpose of the event is to focus on Rangeley’s rich outdoor sporting heritage and help residents and visitors gain a fuller appreciation for the sporting traditions and history of the region,” organizer Don Palmer said in a news release.

Highlights this year include an appearance by Smokey Bear to celebrate the icon’s 60th birthday, along with forest wardens and memorabilia. Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife biologists will also demonstrate their power net used for capturing turkeys.

The eighth annual event will inaugurate its first Maine Guides competition. Fly-casters will compete for prizes based on distance and accuracy of their casts.

Activities range from outdoor-related crafts such as bow-making to classic sporting skills including fly-casting, archery and trap shooting. Family activities include a canoe race, a pond ecology safari and crafts. Exhibitors will include 20 sporting and conservation organizations providing educational lectures and demonstrations on ecology, area history, taxidermy, fly-tying and archeology.
