RANGELEY – The Wilhelm Reich Museum will present a program, “Sporting Camps of the Rangeley Region,” with speaker Earle G. Shettleworth Jr., Maine state historian, at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 9, at the museum.
From Kennebago down to Umbagog, there are remnants along the lake shores of old sporting camps of the Rangeley region, relics of a bygone era. Today most of them are private residences. A handful still operate as sporting camps.
Shettleworth will share his historic photographs by E.R. Starbird, who opened a studio in Farmington in 1882 and soon discovered a market for stereoscopic views and photographs of the Rangeley area.
For the next 20 years, he created a comprehensive photographic record of the Maine wilderness, encompassing not only Rangeley, but Moosehead Lake, the West Branch of the Penobscot River, the Katahdin Iron Works, and the Aroostook River.
