RUMFORD – Police in Rumford and Dixfield are seeking help from the public after last month’s rash of car break-ins.

Rumford police received eight complaints of car burglaries on July 28; Dixfield police fielded nine reports on July 17, one two days later and another on Wednesday.

In Rumford, the first complaint came in at 3:45 a.m. on July 28. A caller said that someone broke into his vehicle parked on Pine Street sometime between 10 p.m. on July 27 and 3:30 a.m. on July 28. No theft occurred.

At 7:10 a.m., a Maple Street resident reported a burglary to her unlocked car, which was parked in her yard. It happened sometime between 11 a.m. on July 27 and 7 a.m. July 28. Nothing was reported taken.

At 7:25 a.m., a Somerset Street resident reported that two unlocked vehicles in her yard had been broken into overnight. A key was missing from one vehicle and drinks had been disturbed in the other car.

At 11:42 a.m., a Strafford Avenue resident reported that someone had rummaged through her husband’s truck overnight. Nothing appeared to have been taken, but the truck’s door was left open and glove box contents strewn throughout the passenger compartment.

At 12:30 p.m., an officer investigating the truck burglary on Strafford Avenue, was told about three other vehicles that had been entered and gone through. All of the glove boxes had been rifled, but nothing appeared to be missing.

At 12:33 p.m., a Somerset Street resident reported that someone had entered her vehicle overnight, but the only thing missing was a bicycle, which was later found down the street.

At 1:56 p.m., another Somerset Street resident reported a vehicle burglary.

At 9 p.m., a Falmouth Street resident reported a car burglary; $20 cash and a credit card were stolen.

Detective Sgt. Stacy Carter said that anyone with information about the incidents should contact either investigating officers Daniel Garbarini or Paul Casey, or call the police station at 364-4551.

The department is expected to issue a cash reward for information on those involved in the break-ins, said Detective Lt. Wayne Gallant.

Another reward was offered for information leading to the recovery of property or about the thieves involved in a recent rash of car burglaries and thefts in Rumford’s Virginia area. Compact discs valued at several hundred dollars were taken.

An investigation also continues into the theft of a car from Dan’s Automotive on Crescent Avenue.

The car was impounded on July 30 when police arrested its owner, Brandon Kimble, 18, of Sanbornville, N.H., charging him with operating after suspension.

Kimble was released on $150 unsecured bail and told to report for arraignment on Oct. 5 at Rumford District Court.

Police issued a bulletin advising Maine and New Hampshire police of the stolen car.

On Wednesday, police in Wakefield, N.H., recovered the car but not Kimble, Carter said.

In Dixfield, on Wednesday, a Weld Street resident reported that an unlocked van had been burglarized sometime on the night of July 16 and 17. A small backpack with women’s sneakers and other items was taken.

On July 19, a Highland Avenue resident reported that his friend’s vehicle had been burglarized two nights before.

On July 17, investigating officer Matt Noyes responded to car burglary and property theft complaints from 5:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. on Third, Weld and Main streets, and on Highland, Coburn, and Park avenues.

“We have suspects,” said Chief Richard A. Pickett, but he would like help from the public in resolving the crimes and getting the property returned. People may call Dixfield police at 562-4517.
