DIXFIELD – A car fire last week in a Dixfield trailer park quickly spread to the rear of a trailer next to it.

Dixfield and Peru firefighters were credited with quickly knocking down the blaze last Monday night and saving the rest of the trailer.

No one was injured in the fire at the home of James Cantello at 8 Meadow Brook Terrace.

Dixfield Capt. Jeff Bolduc said family members were home at the time, but escaped safely. It was not known if they were staying with friends or relatives until the trailer could be repaired.

Bolduc said the incident began at 8:45 p.m. when Dixfield firefighters were dispatched to a fully involved vehicle fire.

A Dixfield patrolman arrived first, relaying information that the fire in the 1984 Ford Bronco II had gotten into the trailer.

“As we were en route, we heard that the fire was spreading to the trailer,” Bolduc said. The truck, which is not owned by Cantello, was parked a foot away from the building.

Became there was a structure fire, Peru firefighters automatically responded for mutual aid.

Seventeen Dixfield firefighters and a handful of Peru firefighters knocked the fire down in less than 15 minutes, attacking the Bronco first with water and fire-suppressing foam.

After the fire was extinguished in the trailer, a thermal imaging camera was used to root out hot spots in the insulation. A wall and section of the roof were destroyed.

Damage was estimated at $15,000 to the Bronco and trailer. It was unknown if either was insured.

Bolduc said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

“It was a non-suspicious fire. We’re looking into the engine compartment or dashboard area for the cause. (Cantello) said he had been driving the Bronco and had problems of some kind with it” before parking it, Bolduc said.
