MEXICO – Teenage sisters Alyssa and Sarah Radmore of Mexico have rubbed elbows with some of the best racers in the nation. Soap Box Derby racers, that is.
This summer, Alyssa, 16, and Sarah, 15, won enough rally points in their Maine masters division to compete at the 67th All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio.
It’s something they’ve done for three straight years, albeit without winning the top honor. They didn’t win this year either, but they’ll be going out on top, said their mother, Barb Radmore.
“They’re basically done in their division,” she said Thursday evening.
But, the Radmore sisters and their winning carts will be at the Southern Maine Soap Box Derby Labor Day Weekend Rally, Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 4 and 5, at the Mexico Wal-Mart parking lot.
There, the two girls are to help with the events and about 25 other racers from Maine and New England.
Saturday races are to begin at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Sunday’s race starts at 9 a.m. Competition is to be in three divisions – stock, super stock and masters.
Barb Radmore said volunteers are still needed to help work at the weights, finish line and with registrations.
To obtain more information or to volunteer, people may call Jim or Barb Radmore at 369-0209.
