ANDOVER – Andover officials found themselves in another feline fix Thursday after about 30 cats and kittens were discovered abandoned in a trailer.
Animal Control Officer Karin Milligan has trapped and rescued 14 cats so far, but unless people step forward to take them in, they will be euthanized by Wednesday to make room for more cats, town secretary Hope Peterson said.
“She can’t capture any more, because she doesn’t have the space to hold them at her house,” Peterson said of Milligan.
“We’ve contacted most local area no-kill shelters, and they all report that they are between 30 to 50 percent over capacity now, so they can’t give us any help.”
Peterson said late Thursday morning that the cats and kittens of different breeds were discovered in a two- to three-bedroom trailer that is estimated to be 14 feet wide by 60 feet long. It is on land owned by Andover Wood Products.
Peterson said the town had planned to burn the trailer.
“But the burn is on hold until we capture all the cats, which all seem to be in fairly good condition,” Peterson said.
Among the cats rescued so far, one is pregnant, three or four are small kittens between 4 and 6 weeks old, and the rest are a variety of ages. Two kittens have already been adopted.
Peterson said the cats were discovered shortly after the trailer’s occupant moved out. She did not identify the man.
“I think he had some cats and just left them there, and the other cats are wild cats that moved in. They’ve been multiplying like bunnies,” she said.
An Andover selectman has contacted the Oxford County sheriff’s office to determine if the town has any recourse.
“He should be charged with animal cruelty, but we want to see what, if anything, we can do to get this guy,” Peterson said.
Peter Theriault of Andover Wood Products, however, downplayed the cats’ predicament.
He said Thursday afternoon that several of the abandoned cats had been rescued by mill employees and taken in. Theriault also declined to name the trailer’s former tenant.
Peterson said that people interested in adopting a cat or donating food and kitty litter should call Milligan at 392-1482 or Peterson at 392-1088, or the town office at 392-3302.
Andover’s last foray into kitty rescues in town came in early September of last year when about 75 cats were found abandoned in a resident’s remotely located home.
At that time, residents from several Maine towns and New Hampshire responded to Andover officials’ pleas for help.
“We’re going to be known as The Cat Town,’ after this” second incident, Peterson said.
