OXFORD – The “Bigs” and “Littles” from the Child Health Center’s Big Brothers Big Sisters of Androscoggin and Oxford counties gathered at the Family Fun Park for a day of fun recently.

It was a day in which to recognize the dedication of volunteers who give their time to ensure that children in the community have a positive role model and a listening ear. The park donated the use of their grounds for a picnic and presented Bigs and Littles with passes for the mini-golf and go-carts courses.

It was a way for Big Brothers Big Sisters Program Coordinator Diane Blanchard and the community to recognize the adult volunteers and their matches. They meet twice a month for an activity. They are matched through a process that considers the needs of the child as well as the interests of the adult and the child.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is a mentoring program under the Child Health Center, a nonprofit organization seeking to improve the lives of children and their families throughout Oxford, Androscoggin southern Franklin and northern Cumberland counties.

Big Brothers Big Sisters has worked with youth in site and community based mentoring programs for more than 11 years and served more than 1,000 mentees in 2004. Anyone who would like to learn more about volunteering as a mentor should call 743-7035.
