LIVERMORE FALLS – Town Manager Alan Gove announced Monday that Bill Nichols has been hired as the new worker in the Highway Department, replacing Warren Smith. He will start full-time next week.

Selectmen approved several appointments, including Gove as tax collector and excise tax collector; police, fire, road and sewer commissioner; as well as general assistance administrator – all titles that go with being manager.

Other appointments included: Dawn Young as excise agent, deputy tax and excise tax collector; Ernest Steward Jr. as chief of police; Kenneth Jones as fire chief; Tammy Greaton to the Board of Appeals for two years and Melissa Lovely for three years.

Faith Nichols is deputy general assistance director, deputy tax collector, registrar of voters and a member for three years of the joint sewer committee.

Brenda Medcoff will be code officer and building inspector.

Kristal Flagg asked to be taken off the Tri-Town Spruce Mountain Board, and will be replaced by Ken Jacques.

Approval was given to abatements to Charles W. Barker for $1,200 in valuation, or $29.34 in taxes; and to the Joan Fuller Revocable Trust for $2,400 in valuation, or $58.68 in taxes.

A supplemental bill will go to Frank and Michelle Coates for $2,500 in valuation, or $61.13 in taxes, for property not included in the original commitment.

Selectman Russell Flagg requested a record of sick days taken by the manager, noting that the town should not get in the same situation as the town of Fayette, when its former manager left and collected on many such days.

“It’s not right for the townspeople to pay for days already taken; we need a check and balance, something to balance us up, perhaps even a policy,” he told the board.

It was agreed that records should be kept of sick and vacation days for all salaried employees: Town Manger Alan Gove, Treasurer Kristal Flagg, Police Chief Steward and Sewer Superintendent Kent Mitchell.

Discussion was held on the possible sale of land at the transfer station to an out-of-state developer who has expressed interest.
