LEWISTON – A course, “Responding to Child Abuse,” will be offered from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Mondays, Feb. 28 to May 23, for professionals working with children and families.

The course will offer an opportunity to learn more about child abuse and neglect issues from professionals presenting on topics in their fields of expertise. It will also help participants to examine how dealing with the issues affects them personally and professionally.

Registration deadline is Friday, Feb. 11, and the free is $185 a person. Professionals will provide a variety of information covering the many aspects of child abuse and neglect in Androscoggin County.

Sponsored by Advocates for Children, the 45-hour course provides 4.5 Continuing Education Units for teachers and professionals.

Presenters will include Norm Croteau and David Hathaway, “The Legal System”; Cathy Lachapelle, Department of Human Services; Bernie McAllister, “Role of Law Enforcement”; Betsy Norcross Plourde, “Responding to Sexual Behaviors”; Hannah Pressler, “Medical Perspectives;” Kathi Grenier, “The Link: Animal Abuse and Family Violence”; Mike Webber, “Responding to Online Child Exploitation”; Peter Wigley, “Abuse of Adolescents”; Erin Brown, “The Effects of Domestic Abuse on Children”; and Mary MacMahon, “The Sexual Abuse of Children.”
